Sports Role Models

Read about positive sports role models who inspire us to greatness.

Sports Role Models Books

There's something in these books for everyone!
This is the perfect gift for the sports fan in your life. Each book contains 33 inspiring stories of remarkable athletes. Each chapter is a short, engaging story about an athlete or coach who exemplifies a positive character trait. Best-selling author, Dr. Joe Hoedel, spent five years carefully researching these role models and highlighting their stories within these books. Many of these chapters cover sports heroes like Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Billie Jean King, Michael Phelps, Wayne Gretzky, and Jackie Robinson. These books also include 16 legendary coaches like John Wooden, Pat Summitt, Dan Gable, Herb Brooks, and Coach K. Other chapters are of less-known, yet equally inspiring human-interest stories that you can’t believe really happened. For example, Erik Weihenmayer, a blind mountain climber who has climbed the highest peaks on all 7 continents; Pete Frates, the man who started the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and Richard Norris Williams, who survived the Titanic and went on to win US Open and Wimbledon championships.

By design, these three books include a mix of historical and contemporary sports figures, a healthy balance of men and women and include diversity in race, ethnicity, background, and perspective.  Cumulatively, these chapters include role models participating in 26 distinct sports and cover many of the greatest sporting accomplishments of the last 100 years. There is something in these books for everyone!

We know that people can be inspired. In fact, people want to be inspired and need to be inspired.  We should be able to look up to positive role models who inspire us to greatness. And sports stories should be a great avenue to inspire people. Unfortunately, the press likes to showcase athletes who have let us down. We know all about the athletes who cheated in sports or failed us with their immoral behavior. We have watched the apologies live on ESPN and followed the court cases on the Nightly News. Each story lowers the bar for each of us. Dr. Hoedel wrote these books to raise the bar back up. He presents the remarkable sports role models who can inspire you to greatness in your own life.  To learn more about Dr. Hoedel’s app-based program designed to improve the character, leadership and sportsmanship of high school athletes, go to :

About Joe Hoedel

Joe Hoedel earned his Ph.D. from Michigan State University. For 20 years, he has served as the president of Character Development & Leadership. He developed two national programs that improve the character and leadership of secondary students. The first program is the evidence-based classroom curriculum, which is used in 3,500+ schools nationwide. The second is the app-based Student Athlete Program, specifically for use by high school athletes in an athletic environment. Joe also authored a textbook for each program that provides the reader with excellent role models to look up to and emulate.

Dr. Hoedel has spoken at hundreds of schools and countless conferences in the past decade. Being a positive role model and developing the character of each student is the hallmark message of his talks. His inspirational message reminds educators and coaches why they entered this profession and how to keep the long-term perspective of students in mind.
