Joe’s Perspective: While this is not a current event and there is no video to watch (sorry, but you’ll have to read this one), it is a touching story worth re-telling. There have been more than a few in my life who made all the difference. I hope the same is true for you. Enjoy the story and remember to thank those who believe(d) in you.

True Story: As she stood in front of her 5th grade class on the very first day of school, she told the children an untruth. Like most teachers, she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. However, that was impossible, because there in the front row, slumped in his seat, was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard.

Mrs. Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he did not play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. In addition, Teddy could be unpleasant.

It got to the point where Mrs. Thompson would actually take delight in marking his papers with a broad red pen, making bold X’s and then putting a big “F” at the top of his papers.

At the school where Mrs. Thompson taught, she was required to review each child’s past records and she put Teddy’s off until last. However, when she reviewed his file, she was in for a surprise.

Teddy’s first grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners… he is a joy to be around..”

His second grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a terminal illness and life at home must be a struggle.”

His third grade teacher wrote, “His mother’s death has been hard on him. He tries to do his best, but his father doesn’t show much interest and his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren’t taken.”

Teddy’s fourth grade teacher wrote, “Teddy is withdrawn and doesn’t show much interest in school. He doesn’t have many friends and he sometimes sleeps in class.”

The Turning Point: By now, Mrs. Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful ribbons and bright paper, except for Teddy’s. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper That he got from a grocery bag Mrs. Thompson took pains to open it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a rhinestone bracelet with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was one-quarter full of perfume.. But she stifled the children’s laughter when she exclaimed how pretty the bracelet was, putting it on, and dabbing some of the perfume on her wrist. Teddy Stoddard stayed after school that day just long enough to say, “Mrs. Thompson, today you smelled just like my Mom used to.” After the children left, she cried for at least an hour.

On that very day, she quit teaching reading, writing and arithmetic. Instead, she began to teach children. Mrs. Thompson paid particular attention to Teddy. As she worked with him, his mind seemed to come alive. The more she encouraged him, the faster he responded. By the end of the year, Teddy had become one of the smartest children in the class and, despite her lie that she would love all the children the same, Teddy became one of her “teacher’s pets..”

A year later, she found a note under her door, from Teddy, telling her that she was still the best teacher he ever had in his whole life.

Six years went by before she got another note from Teddy. He then wrote that he had finished high school, third in his class, and she was still the best teacher he ever had in life.

Four years after that, she got another letter, saying that while things had been tough at times, he’d stayed in school, had stuck with it, and would soon graduate from college with the highest of honors. He assured Mrs. Thompson that she was still the best and favorite teacher he had ever had in his whole life.

Then four more years passed and yet another letter came. This time he explained that after he got his bachelor’s degree, he decided to go a little further. The letter explained that she was still the best and favorite teacher he ever had. But now his name was a little longer…. The letter was signed, Theodore F. Stoddard, MD.

The story does not end there. You see, there was yet another letter that spring. Teddy said he had met this girl and was going to be married. He explained that his father had died a couple of years ago and he was wondering if Mrs. Thompson might agree to sit at the wedding in the place that was usually reserved for the mother of the groom.

Of course, Mrs. Thompson did. And guess what? She wore that bracelet, the one with several rhinestones missing. Moreover, she made sure she was wearing the perfume that Teddy remembered his mother wearing on their last Christmas together.

They hugged each other, and Dr. Stoddard whispered in Mrs. Thompson’s ear, “Thank you Mrs. Thompson for believing in me. Thank you so much for making me feel important and showing me that I could make a difference.”

Mrs. Thompson, with tears in her eyes, whispered back, “Teddy, you have it all wrong. You were the one who taught me that I could make a difference. I didn’t know how to teach until I met you.”

(For you that don’t know, Teddy Stoddard is the Dr. at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines that has the Stoddard Cancer Wing.)

Your turn: 1) What are your thoughts and reactions? What did Mrs. Thompson do for Teddy that others didn’t?

2) Who has believed in you when others didn’t? Have you thanked them lately?

    2) Who has believed in you when others didn’t? Have you thanked them lately?
My parents have always believed in me when others didn’t and I have thanked them lately

  45. This story is very humbling and inspirational. In the story, Mrs. Thompson was the teacher of Teddy and he always seemed sad and like he didn’t want to be in school. On Christmas he brought Mrs. Thompson a bracelet and his moms perfume. His mom had passed away and he told her that she smelt like his mom before she died. Mrs. Thompson listened to Teddy, like other students and teachers didn’t. She helped him in school and encouraged him to be better.

  46. This a really great lesson about not judging people. The teacher and student both earned one another’s respect. Although the teacher judged the student for not working hard at first, she came to admire him for still working despite his situation at home. The student started to respect the teacher once she started being kinder to him and really giving him a chance. They both helped change each other for the better.

  47. This is a very inspirational story, Mrs. Thompson making his situation nicer by respecting him, and him helping her be a better teacher. A person who had believed in me would be my parents, when others had not.

  49. i thought that mrs Tomson is a nice person and did not know that his mom died till she looked at teadys school stuf that his other teachers .
i have some of my teachers and and people that that i know and no

  50. 1) What are your thoughts and reactions? What did Mrs. Thompson do for Teddy that others didn’t? I think this blog puts a story infont of something. No matter how bad a student is in class, no teacher or student knows how their home life is. I think this blog has showed people who have read it not everything is as it seems. Mrs.Thompson encouraged Teddy more than the students to do better. Most students would have already done well, But teddy needed more guidance than other students.

    2) Who has believed in you when others didn’t? Have you thanked them lately?
My mother has believed in me when no one else has, she’s my light, she’s my life’s blood, where i have gotten my name. She is everything to me and I appreciate her so much.

  51. This is a very good blog on appreciation because it shows that someone in the dumps can be brightened by another and change their life for the better.

  52. This is a very good blog on appreciation because it shows that someone in the dumps can be brightened by another and change their life for the better. She did stuff that others wouldn’t for him she helped him a lot

  53. 1) Mrs. Thompson is a beautiful soul that treats other people with respect and Teddy treats her with respect and helps her improver herself and make her a better teacher.
    2) A person who believed in me is myself. I’ve always been looked down upon and been the underdog in my life, so not many people support me in whatever I do. Or they’re all too paranoid to think that anything is going to go right.

  54. 1. The story is really wholesome and shows how believing in someone can make all the difference. Other teachers couldn’t see past Teddy’s low motivation and struggles. All it took was one person to reach out and give him a little help before he was right back on the right track.
    2. My friends and family have believed in me before when others didn’t, and I always make sure to thank them for it. This story shows the importance of appreciation and how small actions can change a life.

  55. 1) my thoughts and reactions are the facts that ms. Tompson gave him a chance. and she was nice to him. and i feel like some teachers in the past weren’t as nice to him because he just didn’t feel motivated after the loss of his mother.

    2) I feel like currently one of my best friends really belive in me more than anyone right now and i am so thankful to have him in my life right now.

  57. I think that this story is amazing showing how teachers care about their students’ lives. showing how Teachers will go out of their way to make sure a student can get anywhere in life.

  58. 1) my thoughts and reactions are the facts that ms.

  59. This is a very heartwarming story that makes us realize that not everything we see or think is true, and that some people are facing very difficult times but with the right motivation and kindness you can get to many things.

  60. 1 the teacher put her own time into teaching him. 2. My bestfriend is the only one who wants me ti follow my dreams in art.

  61. I think this story is very crucial for people to read, this can show them what to do in a situation of having a a family member with depression. I beleive that what Mrs.Thompson did was a very good help for Teddy.
